LYNX Projects for Learning to Code

Lynx is a designed-in-Canada coding app from a team with decades of experience making coding apps for K-12 students.

Lynx is a cloud-based, text-based programming app for learners to create a wide variety of interactive projects from greeting cards to simple video games. During Covid-19, this is a great resource for remote learners. Lynx has been approved as a learning resource by the Ministry of Education of Ontario.

This 128 page book is an easy-to-follow, self-study guide and is aimed at children 9 to 16, and is available in English with a French version coming in February. We have used Canadian spelling and included Canadian clipart such as Terry Fox animations and First Nations artwork.

Think of Lynx as the next step after block-based coding tools and before professional grade languages like Python. It is easy to share Lynx Projects with friends.

TakingIT Global, a Toronto-based non-profit, received a grant from the CanCode Program of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) Canada. Consequently, this book and the Lynx coding app are free for Canadian residents.

In January, we will schedule bi-weekly Office Hours so Library staff can ask questions.

If a student publishes a Lynx project before March 31, 2021 and fills out a short online form they can enter a random draw for a chance to win a Windows laptop or Chromebook or an Arduino robotics kit. Contest not valid in Quebec.

What families need to run Lynx:
  • An Internet connection; and
  • A Windows 10 computer, a Mac or a Chromebook. Lynx will run on iPads and Android tablets but with more difficulty because of screen size—and a keyboard is recommended!
